Help the children. Not the molesters!

Sample Letter or Email

Dear Senator (insert name),
Dear Representative (insert name),

I am contacting you to ask you to support legislation to protect our children from potential child molesters. I want you to to support and pass legislation that will eliminate the criminal statutes of limitations for sex crimes committed against children under the age of 18.

Our children are entitled to grow without the fear of molestation. All criminal acts of molestation committed against children under the age of 18 should forever be subject to punishment. Why else have we made them criminal?

Those who are thinking of molesting a child should know they will be responsible for that criminal behavior for the rest of their lives. They should know that even if their victim or victims are not able to immediately come forward and tell their story, whether because of fear, shame, or for some other reason, when they are able to, they can be prosecuted. If such a law deters only one act of molestation, it is worth it.

It is my understanding that there is no statute of limitations for homicide. Why would a child need to die before the offender is subject to prosecution at any time after the act? Why would we not want to identify a child molester even if it is many years later? By limiting the responsibility for the molestation to a certain number of years during which prosecution can occur, do we not feel some responsibility when and if the molester commits criminal acts against additional victims after the statutes of limitations have passed on other cases?

I cannot think of any reason why you or anyone would oppose such a change in the law. Please show that you support the elimination of the criminal statutes of limitations for sex crimes committed upon children under the age of 18 by supporting and passing such a change in the law in the next session of the legislature. Let us not continue to reward child molesters.

Sincerely,
